iPad car mount mod
Keep the kids happy…
Like many of you, we have 2 little ones who need a certain level of digital entertainment whilst on long road trips. The iPad of course, is an easy way to keep them occupied with the countless movies available to download or from streaming services like Netflix or Amazon. The goal was to have an easy system to support the iPad while not taking up too much room and to look somewhat ‘factory’.
After a bit of searching online I decided that a floor mount ‘arm’ system was the way to go that I could use for the kids when needed and for myself the rest of the time. The system is designed to bolt to the front seat floor mount and position in a way for the drive or back seat passengers to view the tablet. I underestimated the length needed to view from the back seat so I had to abandon this idea immediately and come up with a new design. Always being a charactor, I felt the best method was to shorten the internal rod and attached the arm to a factory bolt on the center console. This would position the iPad directly in the center of the 2 front seats and provide a clear view from the back seats. Also by shortening the internal rod, it would significantly reduce the amount of wobble when the truck was in motion.
Below are some pictures to illustrate how easy it was to shorten the rod to fit my needs. Enjoy!
Original length was around 20″
The bottom mounting bracket is secured by 2 allen bolts
Here is everything disassembled
A quick trip to Ace Hardware for a longer bolt
Testing to see the desired height
Using my trusty “Jawhorse” as a vice to hold while trimming with the hacksaw…overall I trimmed about 8″ off the total length
Now its time to enlarge the hole to accommodate the factory bolt
Using a step bit until the hole is big enough
Cut the outer plastic piece to fit and re-assemble.
Attached to the center console
Time to hit the road while playing the kids favorite movie!
